Ryan Tubridy says he ‘hit the jackpot’ as he celebrates major milestone

Ryan Tubridy has expressed his gratitude and excitement as he celebrates a significant milestone with Virgin Radio, where he’s been on air for a year. Marking the anniversary of taking over the breakfast radio show, which is also broadcast on Dublin’s Q102, Tubridy took to Instagram to share his thoughts.

He wrote: “A year ago today, I started a new job in a new station in a new city! From the moment I walked through the door at Virgin Radio, I was welcomed in the warmest way by a beautiful bunch of people who love doing what they do for a living.”

He continued, “I’ve made new friends, been to places I never expected to go and interviewed people I always wanted to meet. When a job doesn’t feel like work, you’ve hit the jackpot! Thank you to all my colleagues both in Virgin and in Q102 in Dublin (who have been equally lovely) and thank you to all the listeners for joining our club.”

The much-loved broadcaster wrapped up with an optimistic note: “Here’s to another year of loving life and always erring on the side of joy!” The update comes amidst news that Q102 bosses are thrilled with Tubridy’s 34,000 listeners, even though it represents a slight dip from the figures he pulled in during his last quarter at the station, reports the Irish Mirror.

A spokesperson for Wireless, which owns stations including Q102, commented on the station’s performance, saying: “We work on year on year comparisons as industry standard best practice.”

They added, “While we can’t compare show timeblocks year on year currently, owing to timeblock duration differences, we are delighted that Q102 has added 18,000 new weekly listeners since last year, clearly driven by the addition of Ryan Tubridy to our daily schedule.”

Tubridy himself recently confessed: “I know I can be ‘an insufferable pain in the hoop at times’.”

Discussing his transition from television to podcasting, he said during an appearance on Mark Moriarty’s podcast Roasted with Mark Moriarty earlier this week: “The Late Late Show was tough because you had 12-15 minutes [to interview guests]. Now I am doing a books podcast and I get these guests that I interviewed on The Late Late Show for 12-15 minutes and it was torture because it’s a construct,” adding, “I enjoyed the job, but now that I have them for the hour it’s great and you can get to know them and you have a proper conversation and see who the real person is. That is very liberating.”
