A rural North Lincolnshire hotel’s refurbishment and expansion has received planning approval.
The Amethyst Hotel at East Halton, not far from Immingham, will increase in size from 15 bedrooms to 23. All eight additional bedrooms will be on the ground floor, replacing redundant space that was part of the hotel’s lounge facilities. East Halton Ltd is the applicant.
The hotel was in early 2024 proposed for conversion into a house in multiple occupation (HMO). But this and a subsequent application to simply convert into residential use were withdrawn, after numerous objections had been made.
As well as the eight new bedrooms, the building will be refurbished, with en suites added to existing bedrooms that currently lack this. There will also be new windows and cladding added, and car parking and cycle spaces expanded to at least 25 spaces.

“Originally built as a petrol station the building has benefitted from a historic change of use and is in need of a programme of works to upgrade the existing facilities,” a planning document states. The refurbishment will “help secure the future of the business that will provide short term accommodation for both visitors and workers to the area”.
When completed and reopened, there will be a responsible person sited in the caretaker’s flat for the hotel. They will maintain detailed records of guest stays and their duration, alleviating fears guests are not using the hotel as a permanent address.

Unlike the previous HMO and residential use withdrawn applications, the proposed hotel expansion has met no objections at all.
