Road work misery to last FIVE months in Redruth as gas works begin

Residents and visitors to a Cornish town are to face months of delays when work to upgrade the gas network gets under way. Wales & West Utilities has announced it will start work to upgrade the gas pipes in the West End area of Redruth in January 2025.

The work, which is scheduled to begin on January 2, is due to continue until the end of May. The utility firm said that while inconvenient, it is “essential to ensure the gas is kept flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses, keeping people safe and warm for generations to come.”

Wales & West Utilities’ Abby Smith is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the wider Cornwall area. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”

The gas firm said it has liaised with Cornwall Council to plan the work, and it has agreed for traffic management to be in place for the duration of the work.

This includes:

  • Rolling multi-way traffic lights on West End (January 2 – April 22)
  • A footpath closure on Church Lane (January 27 – February 28)
  • Rolling traffic lights on Blowinghouse (April 7 – May 21)

During this time, motorists are advised to allow extra travel time.
