Restaurant in striking Devon location still looking for new owners

A restaurant in one of Devon’s most striking locations is still looking for new owners months after going on the market. The asking price has now been dropped in a bid to flog the site.

Mother Meldrums Tea Room & Garden located in Lynton’s Valley of Rocks was first advertised for sale in May by Fine & Country estate agents, with an asking price of £2.5million. They said the owner, who bought the property more than 20 years ago, were looking to retire.

The restaurant has now closed for the winter season but during its opening months, it serves up home cooked food and cream teas, mainly on sunny and dry days as it has outdoor seating only. In the garden, there are 18 picnic tables, enclosed within a dry stone wall.

According to Fine & Country, the business has a high six-figure turnover, which will be made available to potential buyers who have inspected the premises, with the owner’s permission.

In addition to the tea room and garden, there is also a five-bedroom owner’s cottage with two en-suites and a guest bathroom. The home boasts a lounge area with views over the surrounding countryside.

In its brochure, Fine & Country says: “This unique property nestles into the iconic Valley Of Rocks only a short one mile walk from Lynton town centre.

“Well known for dramatic coastal scenery and footpaths that meander high above cliffs that fall into the sea, this has to be one of the greatest tourist spots in the South West. The location secures a guaranteed trade for the tea room and tea garden.”

The property is now being re-advertised, with a new asking price of £2.3million, more than six months after it first went on the market.
