Residents in Chester, Nantwich and Northwich have been warned of flooding today by the government’s flood forecast service. Hundreds of flood alerts have been issued across the country with many in Cheshire.
But the more serious red flood warning has been issued in four locations across the region. One flood warning has been issued around the Countess of Chester Country Park region in Chester, which runs alongside the Shropshire Union Canal.
The warning states: “Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Finchetts Gutter, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around Parkgate Road including Abbotsmeads and Abbots Terrace.
“We are closely monitoring the situation. Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.”
In Northwich town centre, flood defences have been put to use once again in the town which has a long history of being vulnerable to flooding. And a flood warning has been put in place for the River Weaver area around Hayhurst Bridge and Northwich Marina.
The warnings states: “Following rainfall overnight and this morning, river levels on the river weaver are continuing to rise. Levels will rise throughout the afternoon and evening.”
The government service says the river level is at 1.82 metres as of 11am today (January 7), and warns that flooding to property in the area is possible when the river level rises above 1.74 metres.
Two flood warnings are also in place along the River Weaver at Acton Bridge and Weaverham.
