An amber cold weather alert has been issued ahead of freezing temperatures arriving across Essex. The alert, which covers all of England, came into force yesterday morning (January 9) and people are encouraged to look out for vulnerable people.
The Met Office and UKHSA are warning that all of the south-east will experience cold weather from 12pm today yesterday (January 9) to 9am on Tuesday January 14. They claim that cold air will spread across the country, and could have a devastating impact on more vulnerable people.
According to BBC weather, the next few days are set to be the coldest, with temperatures dropping as low as -3C. Temperatures may begin to warm up at the start of next week, however, with temperatures as high as 9C predicted.

According to UKHSA, forecast weather is likely to cause significant impacts across health and social care services, including a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions. We may also see impacts on younger age groups and a likely increase in demand for health services.
Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care System said of the alert: “The Met Office and UK Health Security Agency have extended the amber cold weather warning for the East of England. Cold weather can have serious health implications, particularly for older people and those with heart or lung conditions.
“If you have a pre-existing medical condition, it’s important to heat your home to a comfortable temperature. Aim to keep the rooms you use most – such as your living room and bedroom – at or above 18°C if possible. Remember to keep bedroom windows closed at night to retain warmth.”
