The price of a pint is increasing for the fourth time in two years.
Diageo confirmed that Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks and Hophouse 13 will rise by six cents per pint on February 3, excluding VAT, while Guinness 0.0 will increase by nine cents per pint, excluding VAT. According to Drinks Industry Ireland, once VAT, duty and the pub margin are added it could mean 30c extra for a pint “at the tap”.
They warned pint prices to well over €6 and even beyond €7 in Dublin. It is understood that the price of Diageo’s draught range is increasing due to wage inflation and the continuing rise in energy costs.
A Diageo spokesperson told Dublin Live: ‘’Like many businesses, we continue to face increased costs across our Irish operations. In an effort to offset these costs and to maintain a sustainable business in Ireland, we have advised our on-trade customers that there will be an increase to the list prices on our full draught product range. This includes an increase equivalent of €0.06c per pint of Guinness, and €0.09c on Guinness 0.0 and will take effect from 3rd February’’ .
Pat Crotty, Vintners’ Federation of Ireland CEO, said the increase will force many publicans to pass on the increase to consumers, further impacting already struggling pubs and their loyal customers. “Publicans are being squeezed from every angle – rising energy costs, higher wages and government-imposed charges,” he said.
“This latest price increase from Diageo adds yet another layer of financial pressure on pubs already struggling to keep their doors open. Our members understand that costs are rising across the board, but what they need now are meaningful supports to help absorb these increases.
“We need suppliers and the government to recognise the unique pressures facing publicans and work with us to find solutions that can sustain this vital sector.”
