Pretty UK pub ranked as one of the best with incredible mountain backdrop

One of the best pubs in the UK is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the country and is close to a famous lake where a world record water speed attempt ended in tragedy in the 1960s. For those wanting to explore the stunning scenery of the UK the Lake District is often top of their list. England’s largest National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site is situated in Cumbria, in the northwest of the country. Visitors can explore the picturesque market villages with rich cultural heritage, enjoy boat trips and water sports on the many breathtaking lakes, set off for treks on the rugged fell mountains or simply take in the stunning scenery.

One village popular with visitors is Coniston, which established itself through its farming, copper and slate industries and was a favourite destination for early Victorian tourists. Fell walkers head for the Old Man of Coniston, which is the highest point in Lancashire and lies to the west of the village.

Traditional local pubs are always a favourite with visitors looking for some well-earned refreshment after a hard day scouring the landscape. One of those which is towered over by the Old Man and which therefore provides the perfect base is The Black Bull Inn. The picture postcard pub is a 400-year old coaching inn and has just been named as one of the best watering holes in the country by The Telegraph.

The pretty pub has been ranked as one of the best

The family owned establishment serves up award-winning ales from the local Coniston Brewery and freshly cooked meals which are prepared to order every day from 12 noon. Hungry explorers can expect all the traditional pub fare such as juicy steaks, burgers with melted cheese and fish and chips as well as smaller snacks.

There are also guest rooms for weary travellers to rest their heads. They range from cosy twins and doubles to family rooms – all with an en-suite bathroom and views of the incredible surrounding landscape. The pub sits close to Coniston Water, which is the lake where British water and land speed record breaker Donald Campbell tragically died in a crash in 1967. Campbell is commemorated by The Black Bull Inn’s most famous beer, Bluebird, which is named after his boat.

Recent visitors to the pub have shared their experiences on Tripadvisor. One wrote: “Excellent food, very generous portions. I had a lovely steak and ale pie which was clean homemade. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful. It’s a lovely old pub with a great atmosphere, very centrally located by the bridge. You can sit outside or in, it’s also dog friendly.” Another shared: “We only had one night at the Black Bull, and it was a return visit. The staff are wonderful! So helpful and friendly….” A third wrote: “Another great pub set in the middle of the village. Lovely open fire, great range of beers and topped off by a very warm welcome from the staff. Although we did not eat, the food we saw being served looked very nice.”
