In the last couple of years Keano has gone from football legend to Adidas model – but that hasn’t stopped one major fashion writer from having a go at his choice of neckwear.
Derek Guy, who has 1.2 million followers on X, regularly assesses celebrities’ outfits and gives sarcastic critiques. Last year he offered a searing takedown of Piers Morgan’s sense of style, and once joked: “I’m going to bully every rich celebrity until they dress how I want.” Now Cork’s own Roy Keane has got it in the neck – as Derek turned his expertise on an old Sky Sports clip.
“Nice outfit but tie knot should be bigger” Derek posted – drawing attention to the frankly gigantic accessory in the video of a younger Keano:
A fellow menswear enthusiast approved of the type of knot and added: “At least it’s a four-in-hand knot” – to which Derek Guy replied: “This is a sixty-four-in-hand.”
The post quickly racked up 99,000 likes – with one follower asking “What happens if the knot gets bigger than the face?” Another came to Keane’s defence, saying: “That’s a very old clip! Roy doesn’t wear ties anymore!”
Another offered their own vision of what it might look like if Roy’s tie knot got any bigger:
Overall, Roy got away lightly as Derek Guy’s critiques of celebrity apparel are often much harsher. Last year he compared several of Piers Morgan’s outfits to clothes worn by Kermit the Frog – with Kermit coming out as the better dresser.
As a fashion expert, Derek has written for GQ, the Washington Post and Esquire, so he knows what he’s talking about. Our own Keano however does have a bit of skin in the game, having taken a step into the world of male modelling in 2023.
Roy is less likely to wear a tie these days, usually opting for a neat T-shirt during his media appearances. But if he ever fancies donning a bit of smart neckwear again, he knows who to ask for advice.
