Politicians and public join forces to ‘Save Goole Hospital’

Goole Market Hall has hosted its first public meeting by the ‘Save Goole Hospital’ action group.

A vast crowd gathered from Goole and the surrounding areas on Saturday January 4 to attend a public meeting amidst fears Goole Hospital could be shut down. Despite these fears, the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLaG) insists that a decision has yet to be made on the hospital’s future.

In her speech, the Chairperson of the action group, Michaela Kenning, expressed her delight at the support and thanked people for braving the cold January weather to attend the event.

Speakers at the meeting also included the MP for Goole and Pocklington, David Davis and the leader of East Riding Council, Cllr Anne Handley. In their speeches, both said they would fight to keep the hospital alive, with Sir David saying he would fight it all the way to Westminster.

In December, both Sir David and Cllr Handley met with NHS officials to hear about the plans for the hospital. After the meeting Sir David said: “Goole Hospital is of vital importance to local residents. I have heard from hundreds of residents, both directly and through social media, who have told me how they would struggle to attend other hospitals and are worried about the impact any cuts to services at Goole Hospital would have on their health.”

Sir David handed over to Julie Challenger who explained to the audience how with over 40 years experience as a nurse, several of those years served at Goole Hospital, she had watched as the services at Goole Hospital had been reduced and witnessed patients being managed at acute hospitals when the facilities and care needed was available at Goole Hospital.

She ended her speech with a quote from Albert Einstein, as she proclaimed: “The world won’t be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.”
