Police warning over ‘modified bike’ with engine strapped to it

Police have issued a warning after seizing a bike in Mansfield which had an engine strapped on it to turn it into a motor vehicle. Officers from the Mansfield South neighbourhood policing team took the vehicle on Sunday (December 29) whilst carrying out patrols.

The policing team said: “The bicycle had been adapted into a motor vehicle by attaching an engine to the vehicle which allowed the bike to be ridden under its own power.” Police say modified bikes are illegal unless they are taxed, have passed an MOT, are registered with the DVLA and operated by somebody with a licence.

The same rules are true for electric motorcycles. Police added: “The penalty includes seizure of the vehicle, points on your driving licence, fines and, in aggravated cases, imprisonment. These penalties still apply even to those too young for a driver’s licence and any points incurred will be added to their driving record once they reach driving age.”

An image shared by the Mansfield South neighbourhood policing team shows an otherwise ordinary blue bicycle, with an engine seemingly fitted to the frame. It comes after police in Nottingham city centre recently announced that they had seized several illegal scooters and bikes, with one delivery driver being found with an “illegally altered and potentially dangerous” electric bicycle.
