A Plymouth man who grew up in the city and stayed local all of his life has sadly died. The much-loved family man worked at Vospers – a Devon and Cornwall car dealership – for 38 years which he “absolutely loved” , his daughter has said.
Warm-hearted Stephen Michael Walters loved a beer with friends and family and he adored playing golf at Welbeck Manor. The 69-year-old passed away on Saturday 28 December after being diagnosed with cancer in August 2024.
He will be deeply missed by his family and close friends and anyone that knew him is invited to attend his funeral on Wednesday 15 January 2025. He leaves behind four daughters, Lisa Souch, Lindsey Lister, Nicole Tremain and Hayley Tremain.
Hayleigh, 27, said: “He absolutely loved working for Vospers, and held massive pride in what he did. He loved all his customers and work colleagues. He was a bubbly, warm and loving man who enjoyed playing golf and being active. My dad was very popular in the Plymouth community. He worked for Vospers for 38 years as a car salesman – where he met many people and made many friends.”
Stephen grew up in different areas of the city and had been in Plymouth all his life. He went to Plym View Primary School followed by Efford Secondary School as a child.
In summer 2024, Stephen began to experience some shoulder and back pain which at first he thought (as a 69-year-old man) would be normal – to start getting the aches and pains. He went and played golf one afternoon, as he would normally do 18 holes at golf and walk around the green, but he couldn’t make the first hole due to becoming breathless.
Stephen was taken to A&E (in August 2024) for a scan which revealed he had stage 4 lung cancer. Things progressed quickly, with many scans, procedures, trials and appointments – he also had a lot of blood clots.
Hayleigh said: “He went into St Luke’s on the 23 December and passed away at 6am on Saturday 28 December (2024) We (the family) know there will be many, many people that wish to attend his funeral which is on Wednesday January 15, 11am, at The Park Crematorium.”
Stephen will be greatly missed by his siblings Louise Pressey, Janet Westcott, Pauline Ivey, Jerry Walters. His grandchildren Abigail , Sophie, Chelsea, Cory (and all his extended grandchildren). And also his best friends, Phil Pressey and John Goddard.
