A building in Sunderland city centre is set to be given a new lease of life after plans were given the green light.
The large building on Stockton Road, near Park Lane Interchange is set to be turned into four apartments after plans were approved by the council over Christmas. The building, which was once home to charity Barnardo’s before housing an estate agents on the ground floor, will see its upper floors converted from offices into apartments.
Last summer, Sundridge Park Properties Ltd submitted plans that included four apartments, a smoke vent on the existing roof, alterations to existing windows, a bin and cycle store, and a new roller shutter access door. The first and second floor offices are currently vacant.
Submitted floor plans also indicate that there would be two flats per floor, with a two-bedroom flat and a one-bedroom flat on the first floor and two two-bedroom flats on the second floor. Floor plans show each flat offering a living/dining area, kitchen and bathroom.
A statement accompanying the plans said: “The property is located on Stockton Road on the end of Olive Street. Stockton Road historically is one of the main arterial roads in and out of the city north to south. Olive Street and Derwent Street are mixture of small retail units to the ground floor, with some residential accommodation to the first floor.
“The property to the immediate north of the application property is Sorrento Italian Restaurant with residential accommodation to the first and second floors. The properties to the immediate south on Olive Street are a two-storey terrace of shops, barbers, café’s and restaurants. To the West is Chaplin’s public house a 1930’s feature building, on the corner of Stockton Road and St Mary’s Street.”
Sunderland City Council approved the plans on December 23.
