Pictures that show how the West Midlands has changed since 1975

As we start 2025 we take a look back to 1975.

Seems like a lifetime ago now, as we take a look through the archives turning the clock back 50 years, half a century, to a very different time.

Noddy Holder and Slade were at the height of their fame. ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ had reached the number one spot in 1973 and the band were riding high on the success of the hit along with many others. Trevor Francis was the star player at Birmingham City FC and would later go on to become the first £1 million player when me moved to Nottingham Forest in 1979 under Brian Clough.

Little and Large were the star acts at the Grand in Wolverhampton and Lenny the Lion was wowing crowds at the Alexandra in Birmingham. Over at the Villa, the club won the League Cup final under manager Ron Saunders.

The big news in the world of the popular TV soap, Crossroads, was the marriage of Meg and Hugh Mortimer. Played by Noele Gordan and John Bentley, the couple’s on screen wedding took place at St. Philip’s Cathedral with the whole cast taking part, followed by the signing at Birmingham Register Office on Broad Street.
