Pictures of Gateshead Flyover work to strengthen structure ahead of New Year

Work has continued over Christmas at the Gateshead Flyover to strengthen the structure ahead of the New Year, with an announcement on upcoming plans this afternoon from Nexus and Gateshead Council.

Construction workers have been on site since Friday, as they work to ease the ongoing transport disruption, with the Metro service having been suspended between Monument and Heworth since December 19.

A bus replacement service has been in place since the suspension. Tyne and Wear Metro issued a service update on Monday confirming that unless anything unexpected happened, Metros would resume running from New Year’s Eve.

The Gateshead Flyover was constructed in the late 1960s, is estimated to have been used by around 40,000 vehicles a day before it’s sudden closure on December 13 over concerns over its structural integrity. Current work to prop up a pillar under the flyover has been expected to take around four days, costing in the region of £2m to £3m to complete, Gateshead Council estimates.
