Pictures from North East deep freeze as forecasters predict cold snap to end this week

Temperatures plunged below freezing overnight again last night, but forecasters have predicted warmer weather for the weekend as the cold snap comes to an end.

On Sunday morning, Marden Quarry Nature Reserve was dusted with white frost on Sunday morning as birds wandered across its icy lake. Swans, ducks, coot and moorhen all call the reserve, a ten-minute walk from the centre of Whitley Bay, home.

And on Saturday, park runners braved the icy paths of Saltwell Park in Gateshead, passing another frozen lake. Aerial shots show the frosty glass panes of the Glasshouse and the frozen rooftops of Heaton too.

The recent cold weather is expected to become milder this week, with the Met Office promising a topsy-turvy week. The north of the country is expected to be warmer than the south, whilst temperatures could hit double figures from Tuesday onwards, according to the Met Office.

Some may welcome the warmer weather, especially after the UK recorded the coldest January night in 15 years on Friday night. Temperatures in Altnaharra, Scotland, hit -18.9°C on Friday night, while Kinbrace in Northern Scotland was the chilliest place recorded on Saturday, with a temperature of 13.9°C.
