Photos from Smithdown Road as police cordon off scene of serious assault

A man in his fifties was arrested following a serious assault near Smithdown Road last night (Friday January 10). Merseyside Police said they were contacted at around 11pm last to reports of an assault on Egerton Road carried out by two males.

The victim is understood to have suffered serious head injuries in the assault and was taken to hospital where he is a serious bu stable condition. The two men left the scene before police arrived.

A 50-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of s18 wounding. He is currently in custody where he is being questioned by detectives.

One resident told the ECHO how they noticed the cordon “late” last night. They said: “Our friend was here last night and when we let them out we saw the cordon. It was quite late but we don’t know anything.

“The police haven’t told us anything today. We were looking online trying to find out what has gone on but nobody knows anything.”

Another neighbour said: “Police knocked on our door earlier and asked if we had heard any shouting or anything last night but we didn’t hear anything. We have no idea what has happened.”

Police said an investigation is underway and house-to-house, CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out in the local area. Det Insp Mike Fletcher said: “We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Egerton Road last night who saw or heard anything to contact us. We would also ask any delivery or taxi drivers to check their dashcams to see if they captured anything significant.”
