Person taken to Darlington hospital after crash on the A1 (M) at Bowburn

One person was taken to hospital on Thursday evening after a crash on the A1(M) in County Durham.

The incident saw a “vehicle leave the carriageway” heading south, highways authorities said. North East Ambulance Service confirmed it had taken one patient to Darlington Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

The crash took place between junctions 61 and 60 and the ambulance service said it had been alerted shortly after 7.45pm.

In a statement, a North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 7.46pm on Thursday 2 January 2025 to reports of a road traffic incident on the A1 southbound between junction 60 and junction 61.

“We dispatched an ambulance crew and a rapid response paramedic to the scene, and transported one patient to Darlington Memorial Hospital for further treatment.”

This saw a lane closed on the road, but this had cleared by around 10pm. Earlier, National Highways described the incident as having involved “a vehicle that has left the carriageway”.
