Ofsted says ‘improvement necessary’ at Stockton school around quality of education

Improvements are required at a Stockton primary school in order ensure pupils reach their full potential, according to Ofsted.

Hardwick Green Primary School was inspected in November last year when the quality of education and leadership and management was deemed as “requiring improvement”. Behaviour and attitudes, personal development of pupils and early years provision were all rated as “good”.

The report praised the school’s “nurturing” environment” and behaviour of pupils, highlighting its early years provision as a particular strength. However, it also said there were areas of improvement required including some aspects of the quality of education.

In its last report in 2019, the Tithe Barn Road school, which is part of the Enquire Learning Trust, was rated as “good” in all aspects including overall effectiveness. Since September 2024, Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgement in its inspections of state-funded schools.

Which areas were criticised?

The report said the inspector felt there were “inconsistencies” in the delivery of the curriculum which meant some pupils were not sufficiently prepared for the next stage of their education. Ofsted also said some activities chosen by teachers did not help pupils to learn and remember the knowledge they require.

“This inconsistency affects pupils’ ability to build knowledge progressively over time,” said the report. “While staff monitor pupils’ understanding, they do not consistently use this information to guide future learning. “

The report acknowledged the school had recently introduced strategies and tasks to improve pupils’ fluency and reading skills but it said those initiatives had yet to show “significant impact”. Reading outcomes were below national expectations, especially for disadvantaged pupils.

Trustees and governors provide a “high level” of support for leaders, said the report. “However, they have not done enough to challenge the school to further improve the quality of education.”

Which areas were praised in the inspection?

The report said the school creates a “nurturing” environment, pupils behave well and are engaged in their learning, and staff are proud to work at the school. Children who struggle with reading are given additional support.

“The school’s calm and orderly environment helps pupils feel secure,” said the report. “Pupils are kind and welcoming to new pupils when they join the school. The school actively monitors and challenges any instances of poor attendance.”

It also said the school runs planned extra-curricular activities and educational visits which helps raise pupils’ aspirations. Teesside Live has contacted the school for comment on the report.
