Nuneaton shop says ‘thanks for cherished memories’ and announces closure after 40 years

A local business that has traded in Nuneaton town centre for almost 40 years has announced it will close its doors for good. Abbeycraft Artworld has been a name on Abbey Street for decades.

But now the independent store said it has taken the ‘sad and difficult’ decision to close. It has blamed a number of factors, including the closure of the nearby old Co-op car park back in 2022.

In a lengthy message on the page on Facebook, it states that the exact closing date has yet to be finalised. But its owners have thanked locals for their support over the years and the ‘cherished memories’ they have helped to provide.

The full statement reads: “After almost 40 years of trading, we have had to make the difficult decision to finally close our doors.

“Due to many factors, Inflation, wage increases, higher bills, and the closing of the Co-op carpark have significantly impacted the running of our little business. As we begin the process, we will work diligently to ensure it is as smooth as possible for everyone involved.

“We will provide additional information on our exact closing date over the next few months.

“In the meantime, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff, past and present, for their tireless efforts and work. We are grateful for their loyalty and commitment to our company, we could not have achieved the success we did without their hard work and dedication.

“We would also like to express our appreciation to our customers for their trust and support over the years. We are proud to have served the arts and crafts community, and we thank you all.”

It concludes: “While we are saddened by the closure of Abbeycraft Artworld, we are grateful for the memories, relationships, and experiences we have gained throughout the years. We will cherish these as we move forward, Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey it’s been a blast.”

The Abbey Street area has been hit by disruption caused by the ongoing works for the Grayson Place development. Currently there are construction works on the old Co-op car park as well as further down the street where the Co-op department store once stood.
