Hundreds of people needed went to Nuneaton hospital’s Accident and Emergency department over the New Year. In the 48 hours between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the George Eliot Hospital has told CoventryLive that 490 people turned up at A&E.
The biggest number was on New Year’s Eve, when staff saw 264 people through the doors. On Year’s Day and there were 226 attendances at the local unit.
As a result of the ongoing pressure on staff, the hospital is urging people to only attend A&E in an emergency. They are being urged to call 111 to get advice before heading down to the hospital.

The New Year numbers are on top of what was a demand-hit festive season with more than 1,500 people seen over the Christmas period. This pressure on the unit, which also impacts the result of the hospital in terms of available beds, has left the ‘Eliot issuing an appeal to the local community.
This is to call 111 before making their way to A&E. This not only eases pressure on the unit, but the hospital says it means people are treated in the right place.
“If you need urgent medical help but you’re not sure where to go, use 111 to get assessed and directed to the right place for you,” the hospital said. “Call, go online or use the NHS App.”
