Nottingham film fans celebrate ‘amazing news’ as Vue announces Cornerhouse cinema takeover

Nottingham cinema-lovers were shocked on Monday when Cineworld announced it would be closing its Cornerhouse venue at the start of February. However, the national cinema chain Vue has since shared the news that it will be moving into the site.

A spokesperson said: “We’re very much looking forward to bringing guests the ultimate big screen experience later this year and will share more information in due course.” Film fans were happy to hear that the space will be filled. “Wow that was quick,” Nicola Bexon commented on Facebook, while Simon Gardner said: “Called it!”.

Lotte Cowan wrote: “Looks like we’ll still have a cinema” and Julie Roberts said: “Looks good and cheaper too.” AmWayne Gorewoda said Vue’s cheap tickets were “a celebration for movie lovers.”

Joanne Michelle said: “Good news! We will still have a cinema!”. Kayleigh Topham added that it “should be lovely in there”. Amy Victoria Gathercole said that she’d rather it be an Odeon “but at least it won’t be left to rot!” and Lauren Lynch said it’s “good they’re keeping a cinema there”.

Stephanie J Blunt said: “I remember when it first opened, it has passed hands so many times.” Meanwhile, Dania F Curd reminisced about the venue, writing: “So many good memories at that Cineworld.”

@NottzVibez commented on the announcement that it was “amazing news”, and @NottsNow wrote: “Vue taking over. It’s not the final nail in the coffin – panic over for those of you who did – Nottingham is not doomed!”

Others were thrilled with the announcement that a Vue cinema would be opening as it meant they could access free tickets through Sky. Glen Russell said it was excellent news “because Sky give away free Vue cinema tickets each month” and Neelam Irfan Shafiq commented: “Will be able to use free Sky tickets now!”. Emma Staples said: “Can finally use my tickets from Sky then”, to which Susan Severn replied that she was “thinking the same thing” and Janice Bamford added “me too at last!”

Sky Cinema customers have access to two free Vue tickets every month which can be used for any standard Sunday to Thursday screenings at UK or Ireland venues.

Box Property, the letting agent for The Cornerhouse, previously confirmed that the cinema would be closing for a period of time after Cineworld’s departure. Frankie Labbate, its director, said: “The cinema will close temporarily to undergo a substantial refurbishment that will deliver a state-of-the-art cinema for Nottingham city centre.”

Vue has 92 cinemas throughout the UK and Ireland with more than 290 screens and states that it “delivers the best choice of content, combined with the best technology in the best environment”. Other cinemas in Nottingham include Showcase, Broadway and The Savoy.
