A stunt that started as a funny bet in a pub has gone on to raise more than £1,000 for charity.
Friends Chewy Logan, Kester Petronelli-Stone and Guy Renner-Thompson, from Bamburgh, were enjoying a pint at The Pack Horse Inn, in Ellingham, Northumberland when they decided to stage a bizarre race, last Saturday.
Chewy and Guy, who is a county councillor and former mayoral candidate, began chatting about who would win should they race one another in a sprint.
“Before long the whole bar was involved,” said Kester, 46.
So the friends agreed to take on the challenge and organised a race, which would see them run 100m wearing full tweeds and then down a pint. And they decided to use the stunt to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Kester, who works as a forester, filmed the race for his YouTube channel. And he will post the video tonight to reveal the winner. The friends did the race on Saturday after spending the day shooting and drinkers at the pub donated £700. A page has since been set-up on the online fundraising site GoFundMe, which has now raised more than £1,000.
“What started as a funny bet between two of our most physically unfit friends, quickly turned into a serious fundraiser,” said Kester. “These two specimen athletes had to sprint 100m in full tweeds then down a pint of beer. We raised £700 outside the pub in less than one hour.
“Lots of people do lots of things in their own way. It just sort of happened, then we thought we are not going to let this go, let’s keep it going.”
