North East Wetherspoon pubs launch special Burns Night menu

Traditional haggis and a Scotland-inspired double burger are to be added to the menu at Wetherspoon pubs across the North East in celebration of Burns Night.

The pub chain will be extending the annual event – which commemorates the life and work of famous Scottish poet Robert Burns on January 25, the date of his birth in 1759 – across a whole week, when it will be serving up a special menu and drinks offers. As previously reported, a variety of North East venues are to host Burns Night celebrations around the big date and 11 Wetherspoon pubs across the region – and around the country – will be joining in by laying on treats including traditional Scottish fare and special whiskies.

Wetherspoon’s seven-day celebration will begin and end either side of the main date, running from January 22 until January 2 inclusive, when customers will be able to fill their boots with the likes of award-winning haggis from the renowned Grants of Speyside, served alongside neeps and tatties to make up the traditional Burns Night supper, and a Caledonian Burger which includes two 3oz beef patties plus haggis and whisky sauce.

The haggis meal costs from £7.49 with a choice of soft drink or from £9.02 with an alcoholic drink. There’s also a small version of the meal available priced around £5.49 or £7.02 respectively.

The burger, which also comes with chips and onion rings, costs from £9.40 with a soft drink or from £10.93 with an alcoholic one. Drinks options during the week will include the likes of an Inveralmond Ossian beer from the Perthshire-based Inveralmond Brewery, being served especially for the event, and a range of other beers, Scottish gins and whiskies.

Tyler Hudson, manager of The Quayside branch of Wetherspoon which is taking part, said: “The seven-day celebration is a great opportunity for our customers to enjoy some traditional Scottish food and drink and to celebrate for longer than just January 25.” Alongside The Quayside, other pubs in and around Newcastle which are participating in the week-long Burns celebration include The Five Swans in St Mary’s Place; The Keel Row in Newgate Street and The Mile Castle in Westgate Road plus The High Main in Shields Road, Byker, and The Job Bulman in St Nicholas Avenue, Gosforth.

Elsewhere, the others are The Tilley Stone in Jackson Street and Wetherspoon at the Metrocentre, both Gateshead; as well as The Ritz in High Street West, Wallsend; The Fire Station in York Road, Whitley Bay, and The Red Lion in Front West Street, Bedlington.
