North East weekend weather LIVE: Updates as ice sparks Metro disruption and closures

Freezing weather across the North East has led to some disruption today, Saturday January 11, with public transport affected by icy conditions while some venues have closed their doors and events have been cancelled.

Met Office weather maps showed temperatures plunging as low as -7°C in parts of the region on Friday night, with many areas waking up to a widespread frost. The cold weather has offered little chance for last weekend’s snow to melt, causing dangerous ice in some areas and forcing some of this weekend’s events to be called off including several Parkruns.

Popular attractions including Cragside, Vindolanda and Wallington have all confirmed that they will not be opening over the weekend due to icy conditions in their grounds. The Tyne and Wear Metro has also been affected by the wintry weather, with gaps in service of up to 40 minutes on Saturday morning due to ice and trains withdrawn from service.

The latest forecast from the Met Office predicts a largely fine and cold day for the region with some sunshine, although freezing fog may persist in some areas with highs of just 3°C.
