North East school closures as wintry weather causes issues with flooding, heating and electrics

Several schools will remain closed today after snow and freezing temperatures resulted in faults to some buildings.

A total of 16 schools across County Durham remained closed on Monday following a weekend of wintry weather. Today, only one of those schools will remain closed.

However, there are also a number of new school closures today due to faults within the building which are due to be repaired in time for Wednesday.

Lanchester EP Primary School, on Front Street, Lanchester, had hoped to reopen today after a burst pipe in school and flooding in part of the building resulted in its closure on Monday, January 6. However, the school will remain closed today to allow for “emergency repairs to the ceiling and electrics”.

The schools and nurseries closed on Tuesday, January 7, are:

Lanchester EP Primary School – Partial Closure for Years 1 and 2 only. Burst Pipe in KS1 and waiting for emergency repairs to the ceiling and electrics in that part of the building. The school is expected to fully reopen on Wednesday, January 8.

St Stephens CE Primary School – The school and nursery will be closed today due to no heating in the building. Staff are working to fix the fault and hope to reopen on Wednesday, January 8.

The Meadows School – The school will be closed today as a result of damage caused by the bad weather which has lead to an electrical concern/issue. Staff have deemed the site not safe due to this. Appropriate actions have been undertaken to have the issue resolved and the school hopes to reopen on Wednesday, January 8.
