Nicola Sturgeon’s sister furious at BBC Scotland over ‘farce’ sketch

Nicola Sturgeon’s sister has hit out at BBC Scotland over a recent sketch which lampooned the former SNP leader in what she termed a “shocking” new comedy show.

In the programme titled Queen of the New Year, lookalikes of Nicola Sturgeon and her spouse Peter Murrell were depicted alongside other celebrities satirised such as Prince Andrew and Michael Buble.

Viewers particularly reacted to one segment showing a couple dashing away in a motorhome while affectionately calling each other “Pumpkin” and “Honey Bunny”—a nod to the iconic Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction, wherein these pet names precede a diner robbery by Amanda Plummer and Tim Roth’s figures. As the skit draws to a close, the comical pair is chased by police after the male’s card is declined at a rural Highland shop.

Gillian Sturgeon took to Facebook voicing her displeasure, suggesting that the BBC was making light of real-life issues, specifically referencing her sister and brother-in-law’s involvement in a serious police probe concerning SNP finances. Expressing her frustration, she wrote: “Shocking what I’ve just watched on BBC. Making comedy out of a farce of a police investigation that real people are suffering from.”

The contentious Queen of the New Year special is credited to notable Scottish comedic forces, Rab Florence and Greg Hemphill.

Operation Branchform was initiated in 2021 after concerns were raised about how £600,000 of donations intended for the IndyRef2 campaign were ultimately used by the Nationalists.

The investigation intensified in April this year when Murrell, the former SNP chief executive, was charged in relation to the alleged embezzlement of party funds, reports the Daily Record.

Police Scotland has confirmed that it has presented its investigation findings to the Crown Office and is now awaiting instructions from prosecutors.
