Glasgow Southside MSP and former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced she has split up with her husband Peter Murrell.
Announcing the news with a “heavy heart”, the former SNP leader confirmed that she and Murrell have decided to end the marriage after nearly 15 years.
Writing on Instagram, Sturgeon said: “With a heavy heart, I am confirming that Peter and I have decided to end our marriage.
“To all intents and purposes, we have been separated for some time now and feel it is time to bring others up to speed with where we are.
“It goes without saying that we still care deeply for each other, and always will. We will be making no further comment.”
Sturgeon and Murrell have been married since July 2010 in a celebration at west end institution Oran Mor and have been together since 2003.
However, in recent years the pair have been embroiled in a finance scandal, leading to Sturgeon standing down as leader of the SNP after taking over from Alex Salmond in 2014. They were both arrested and released without charge in 2023 as part on an investigation into the party’s finances.
However Peter Murrell, a former chief executive of the party, was charged in April 2014 in connection with with the embezzlement of funds from the Scottish National Party. At the time, Sturgeon described the situation as “incredibly difficult”.
