New Year’s Honours: Hollywood star among Devon recipients

Beloved actress Carey Mulligan, who lives on a 350-acre farm on the outskirts of Exeter with musician and singer husband Marcus Mumford, has been awarded a CBE for her services to drama in the New Year Honours List 2025.

The 39-year-old, who has wowed critics and audiences on screen and stage in Drive, Maestro, Promising Young Woman and She Said, lives in the Ide area with her husband and their two children Evelyn and Wilfred. They moved into the 16th century house in 2013 seeking a quiet, private life.

The Oscar nominated actress joins a list of 11 people from Devon who have been recognised for their achievements and services. The other recipients include inspirational Plymouth sportswoman Erin Kennedy MBE, a gold medallist winner in the Paralympics, who has been honoured with an OBE.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer at 29-years-old and after receiving the all clear has dedicated much of her time to raising awareness of the disease. Erin is a professional coxswain rower for Team GB and won a gold medal in the Paralympics Games in 2020.

Erin was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in 2022 and underwent chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. She was given the all clear from cancer in March 2023.

An OBE has also been awarded to Dr Matthew Hort, a principal fellow in Atmospheric Dispersion and Air Quality at the Exeter-based Met Office. He has played a leading role in a number of national and international working groups and task teams in understanding and developing improved capabilities to deal with risks and emergency events, including the Icelandic eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull, Grímsvötn, and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.

For services to animal welfare, Barbara Gardner, founder and CEO Animals Interfaith Alliance, has received an MBE. She is also a trustee and treasurer for the RSPCA.

Barbara, of Ivybridge, has previously been awarded the RSPCA’s Queen Victoria Silver Medal for long and meritorious service for animal welfare. The Animal Interfaith Alliance is a unique alliance of the world’s most influential faith based, animal advocacy organisations which speaks out on the moral treatment of animals by drawing on the combined wisdom of all faiths and worldviews.
