New Year weather warnings in northern Lincolnshire as ‘strong winds, rain and snow’ forecast

A weather warning for wind has been issued for New Year’s Day in northern Lincolnshire with snow possibly falling in some parts of the region too.

The Met Office is predicting a “distinctly unsettled” transition between 2024 and 2025 with the recent high pressure that has brought days of low cloud and fog, and now some sunnier spells, making way for “potentially disruptive wind, rain and snow” around the country.

Deputy chief meteorologist Tony Wisson said: “Later in the week, wintry showers are likely to be a feature of the forecast as a cold northerly flow becomes established.”

Winds are expected to strengthen on New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day. The wind warning will come into effect from 9am on Wednesday, January 1 and be in place until 6am on Thursday. This covers all of northern Lincolnshire and warns of “very strong winds” with a possibility of “some disruption”. The warning states: “A deep area of low pressure is expected to cross the UK from the west, bringing a spell of very strong winds. Gusts of 65-75mph are likely around coasts and hills, especially in the south and west, with 50-60mph gusts likely fairly widely inland.”

The milder temperatures of recent days will also make way for much colder conditions from New Year’s Day with daytime highs dropping to between 3 and 6C, and overnight lows regularly falling below freezing from midweek and into next weekend.

Risk of snow

A further weather warning will be in place between 9am on New Year’s Day and 3am on Thursday due to a risk of “heavy and persistent snow”. This includes some western parts of North Lincolnshire, including Crowle, with heavy downpours further east currently more likely to fall as sleet or rain.

The warning states: “A band of rain in association with a deep low pressure system moving in from the west pushes east on Wednesday. This is likely to turn to snow as it moves into cold air across the northern half of the UK. 2-5cm and locally nearer 10cm of snow accumulations are possible widely, with 10-15cm and locally 20-25cm over hills with significant drifting due to strong winds.”
