New photos show Cambridge South station progress ahead of opening later this year

New photos have shown the progress being made on the Cambridge South station site. Plans for the station were given the green light by the Department for Transport (DfT) in December 2022.

The station will be on the Cambridge and West Anglia Main lines and be next to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Once construction is complete, it hopes to link the campus to areas across the UK, including London, Birmingham and Stansted Airport among others.

It is also hoped that trains will be running to Bedford and further afield along the East West Rail project. In the latest update that was posted earlier this month, the first of two footbridge spans was lifted into place over the tracks.

Engineers are also working to build the secondary footbridge at the southern end of the platforms. It follows previous work that took place over the Christmas period, including track work and the new island platform being surfaced.

The station and associated infrastructure are estimated to cost around £211 million, which is part of a package allocated by the Government. Among the features on the site are a two-storey, four-platform station which will include lifts to all platforms, as well as parking spaces for up to 1,000 bicycles.

Work on the site began on January 17, 2023 with the first works compound built under the Addenbrooke’s Road bridge. Network Rail has said the station will “deliver better transport options and connectivity” for millions of passengers as well as “open up an array of employment opportunities”.

Cambridge South station is expected to open later this year. For more details about the project, click here.
