New Northern Ireland weather warning issued by Met Office as temperatures plummet

A new weather warning for ice covering parts of Northern Ireland has been issued by the Met Office.

The weather forecaster issued the yellow warning on Thursday morning, January 2, and advised that we can expect “icy surfaces leading to some difficult travel conditions.”

It has been issued for counties Derry, Armagh, Antrim, Down and Tyrone with the warning in place from 5pm on January 2 until 10am on January 3. The warning is also in place for parts of England and Scotland.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Scattered wintry showers will be replaced by a longer spell of rain and sleet for a time on Thursday night, particularly across western Scotland and Northern Ireland. As temperatures dip below freezing, this will lead to a risk of ice formation on untreated surfaces, especially inland.”

As for what we can expect from the weather warning, they added:

  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

Here’s what to expect over the next few days, according to the Met Office.

A cold but bright and largely dry day, the best sunny spells in southern counties. A few wintry showers, mainly in the north, these mostly in the morning. Maximum temperature 3 °C.
