A Hull gym with a “for each and everyone” ethos is expanding its reach into another part of East Yorkshire.
CrossFit already has well-established gyms at Sutton Fields (CrossFit Hull) and at Pryme Street, Anlaby (CrossFit Humber). At the end of this month, it aims to open CrossFit Brough, in what was a derelict boxing gym.
Carl Ham, of CrossFit Brough, said: “We’re preparing to open on Monday, January 27. We’re just wanting to reach out to the community about us being for anyone and everyone – we’re not just about elite athletes.”
The gym is designed for all ages, from mid-teens upwards, and for all abilities. Carl said: “If you could copy and paste what CrossFit Hull and Humber is, then that is what you can expect at Brough.
“CrossFit is all about community based fitness – this is just as important as the exercise – working out, having fun with likeminded, good people. For anyone who tries it, it is life changing, and everyone is welcome here.

The new gym has been developed in what was originally a 1980s squash court, later turned into a boxing gym, at Blackburn Leisure in Brough. Carl said the run-down space still had a boxing ring in it and out-dated toilets.
“Myself and some friends decided to open in Brough, to be able to accommodate more people in a new area. We have about 50 people booked onto trials and about 100 who have expressed interest generally.
“Brough will be a classes-only gym and every class is a one-hour slot. Depending on the workout of the day, there may be 12 or 13 people in the one class.”
The revamped CrossFit Brough will run classes that incorporate weightlifting, gymnastic movement, cardio-vascular and conditioning, to help people improve their overall fitness. “The whole point is, we are for each and everyone,” said Carl, who said anyone’s first session will be free.
“We also work with CrossFit Kids and have Parkinson’s classes, brain injury classes and over-55 classes. Yesterday we had a parent message us about starting a trial in Brough for someone coming out of remission from cancer, which is brilliant.
“Everyone in a class will do the same thing, they will have the same stimulus, but the weights or the movement will vary on ability.” You can find out more via the CrossFit Hull and Humber website or on social media or email crossfitbrough@gmail.com
