New gym facilities at Havelock Academy thanks to £65,000 grant

Students and the community are enjoying brand-new gym facilities at Havelock Academy.

The school, which is part of the David Ross Education Trust, received funding through the Opening Schools Facilities Fund (OSF) which aims to improve school facilities as well as making sure they are available outside of normal educational hours.

Thanks to a £65,000 grant awarded over the last two years, Havelock Academy have been able to fund a new fitness suite. The grant, which was made possible through Active Humber, a charity that helps people access sports to improve health and wellbeing, has also meant there have been upgrades to the swimming pool, tennis and netball courts and local community clubs.

Students Niya and Ayesha from Havelock, on using the new gym facilities said: “I really enjoyed it and I’m talking to others that I didn’t know in the school, so it’s broadened my confidence to speak to other peers in different years.

“I enjoy using the gym and having access to the equipment. Having access to that equipment helps me enhance my strength for other sports I take part in during my Havelock journey.”

Shane Ward, Head of Sports Enrichment at DRET said: “It is absolutely fantastic to access funding to upgrade, create and sustain these facilities for the students and the local community to use. I would like to thank Nicola Massingham who came to see the new facilities and thank her for working with us to securing much need funding.

“The sports facilities are now much more sustainable, and the improvements made to the swimming pool, changing facilities, tennis and netball courts all mean a much better experience for everyone using them.”

Emma Marshall, Principal at Havelock Academy said: “This is a brilliant update to our current sports provision, and I am so pleased that we have been able to run girls football and netball sessions too with some of the funding, with more pupils signing up to the high quality clubs we put on for our young people.”
