The cold conditions that hit the nation this month are set to return, with temperatures expected to plummet again. The UK Health Security Agency has issued cold health alerts for many parts of the UK, including Merseyside.

The yellow health alert is in effect from tomorrow, Thursday, January 17 at 6pm until Tuesday, January 21 at 9am. The UKHSA say: “Forecast weather is likely to have minor impacts on health and social care services, including increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people and greater risk to life of vulnerable people.”

The Met Office forecast for tomorrow shows Liverpool with a minimum of 3 °C and a maximum temperature of 7 °C. However, it is expected to feel as low as 1 °C throughout the day. The weather agency states: “A cloudier day than Thursday with the odd brighter break developing at times. Dry for most but some drizzle in places and turning breezy into the afternoon. Maximum temperature 7 °C.”

Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecast currently says: “Staying generally dry albeit often cloudy with occasional sunny intervals through the weekend. Some patchy rain possible Monday. Feeling chilly with overnight frosts possible.” Temperatures will drop further as the weekend arrives with Saturday and Sunday both expected to hit lows of just 1 °C.

The Met Office warn that towards the end of next week, periods of much wetter and windier weather will most likely eventually become more prevalent, from northwest to southeast. They state: “Ahead of this a colder, more settled southeasterly wind may develop for a time. There is a small chance however, that alternatively winds could turn much more easterly, and colder, bring the risk of snow showers.”

The cold weather alert comes just four days after an amber alert covered the nation. Speaking last week, Dr Agostinho Sousa, from the UKHSA, said it was “vital that we continue to check in on friends, family and neighbours that are most vulnerable. These people could be more at risk of heart attacks, stroke and chest infections as a result of cold temperatures.”

Merseyside experienced a rare seven days of weather warnings as the region battled with icy and snowy conditions. The weather resulted in traffic chaos, school closures and Merseytravel cancellations.
