‘Never leave appliances unattended’ says fire service after tumble dryer causes kitchen blaze

A kitchen in a Leicester street was damaged by fire when an unattended tumble dryer overheated. The blaze happened on Monday (December 30) in Stanley Drive, Humberstone.

A spokesperson for the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) said it received a call about the fire at 4.50pm. They said two engines from Eastern Fire Station attended the scene, and crews spent around 40 minutes at the property dealing with the incident.

Pictures provided by the service showed that flames had damaged appliances and heavy smoke had damaged the wider kitchen. The fire service praised the occupants’ actions in closing doors, which had helped to prevent a more serious incident.

The service also issued a warning about leaving appliances unattended. The LFRS spokesperson said: “A positive take away from the incident was that the occupants had closed the kitchen doors, which prevented damage to adjoining rooms. This highlights how closing doors can help reduce fire spread and limit damage to your home.”

They added: “If you plan to leave your house, we strongly advise against leaving dishwashers, washing machines, or tumble dryers running, as they can pose a significant fire risk.”
