Several areas of the country were hit hard by snow overnight, particularly in the west of the country, with a key road for the region left unusable.
Areas of Sligo, Leitrim, North Roscommon, North Mayo and Longford saw higher snowfall totals than the rest of the country, especially over hills.
This has led to traffic disruption in many areas, with Donegal Weather Channel sharing a photo of the N17 that barely resembles a road at all, stating: “This shows the road conditions around the N17 near Knock Airport tonight with big snowfall amounts in the Area. The road is closed and not passable for HGVs.”
They added: “Road conditions are already deteriorating across the country with ice developing widely.”
“Please drive with extreme caution as road conditions will be particularly challenging tomorrow morning as any snow, slush or water turns to ice.”
Several overlapping weather warnings have been issued, with a nationwide snow/ice warning set to last until 12pm on Tuesday.
A nationwide Status Yellow low temperature warning from Sunday evening until Thursday evening has been extended until midnight on early Friday morning.
Several bus services across the country have been cancelled due to unsafe travelling conditions.

Met Éireann’s Deputy Head of Forecasting Liz Coleman stated:
“This prolonged cold spell will bring very hazardous conditions over the next few days with no real opportunity for melt of significant lying snow. Given there has been a lot of snow over the weekend, as well as rain which has now frozen, there will be really dangerous conditions on the roads.
“The icy conditions will be particularly impactful for some road users, such as cyclists and motorcyclists, so alternative travel should be considered if possible.
Met Eireann has issued the following forecast.
A very cold day on Tuesday with sunny intervals and scattered wintry showers, most frequent in the west and north. Frost and ice along with some lying snow will persist in some areas all day. Highest temperatures of just 0 to 5 degrees in light to moderate northwesterly winds, fresher at times near western and northern coasts.
Extremely cold and largely dry on Tuesday night though a few wintry showers will affect parts of the north and west. Lowest temperatures of -8 to -3 degrees generally, locally lower, with a severe frost and icy stretches. Light variable breezes will allow patches of freezing fog to develop.
