‘My pal wants to name baby after a dictator – she says everyone has forgotten him’

Some parents carry on family traditions with baby names, while others draw inspiration from beloved books and films for their child’s name. But one woman is biting her tongue after learning what her American mate plans to call her baby boy, worried the name could have a negative impact on his life.

Sharing her dilemma on Reddit, she explained: “My friends are expecting and they recently told me what name they plan on giving him. Let’s just say it’s the first name of a certain former German dictator. I asked them why they chose it, and they told me they thought it sounded nice, they liked the meaning, and that they ‘don’t think anyone will associate it with him anymore’.”

The woman expressed her confusion, stating: “What’s crazy to me, is that the parents are both pretty left-wing, albeit not overly political. I simply can’t understand their decision here.” Although she chose not to reveal the child’s name, many people speculated that it was Adolf. Users on social media advised her to discuss the matter with her friends, warning that the name would “ruin his life” if not changed.

One user cautioned: “Tell them their son will get bullied for the rest of his life.” Another user added: “They don’t think anyone will associate it with him anymore? Remind them that Judas is still off the table 2000+ years later.” A third user pointed out: “It might have been a common name when such a dictator had been alive, but no one would be able to name a child that these days without severe backlash. On the child. Which is ridiculously unfair, but that’s what will happen.”

The user urged: “You really should do what you can to prevent this, show them this Reddit, show them history books, make PowerPoint presentation. Anything! ” Yet another user added: “The fact that we don’t need to know the name to know which name you’re referring to, is evidence enough that it still is associated with him. May as well name him Voldemort.”
