Muslim volunteers brave the cold to clean up Newcastle on New Year’s Day

A Muslim community in Newcastle started off the new year by continuing a long-standing tradition as they spent the day cleaning up the streets of the city.

Volunteers from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) joined efforts with volunteers across Yorkshire and the North East to tidy their neighbourhoods.

Across Newcastle, Hartlepool, Leeds and Bradford, 119 volunteers braved the cold weather to collect litter. The local initiative was part of a nationwide campaign, where over 1,500 volunteers across the UK collected more than 480 bags of litter in 75 towns and cities.

This initiative is just one of many organized by AMYA under its Mercy4Mankind campaign. Throughout last year, the group hosted tree-planting events, fundraising drives, blood donations, and food distribution efforts.

In the past two years alone, AMYA has raised over £750,000 for British charities, donated 34 tonnes of food to food banks, provided 4.6 million meals, and contributed over 57,000 hours of community service.

Malik Fraz Ahmad, spokesperson for AMYA commented: “Cleanliness is a core tenet of our faith, and this initiative allows us to put our values into action while giving back to our country. Seeing our youth and community members come together on New Year’s morning to serve others is truly inspiring and hopefully shows our unwavering commitment to improving the communities we live in.

“The initiative not only aimed to clean up the streets but also to promote a sense of civic responsibility and inspire others to take pride in their communities. AMYA hopes such efforts encourage positive habits and foster a stronger connection between individuals and their local communities.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the event and invite more people to join us in future initiatives.”
