A mum has been diagnosed with a rare cervical cancer that is ‘not easily detectable through a smear test.’ Zoe Essam was given the devastating diagnosis at the age of just 34.
The mum-of-two was diagnosed with Villoglandular Adenocarcinoma in 2019, a rare form of cervical cancer not easily detectable through a smear test, according to her family. And now her friends and family are trying to raise £40,000 for ‘breakthrough treatment’ not available through the NHS.
Zoe’s husband, James, said: “We are fundraising for Zoe to have a breakthrough cancer treatment, currently only available in Europe. We need to raise £40,000, and your support can help her fight this battle. Our goal is to raise enough money for Dendritic Cell Therapy, a groundbreaking and promising cervical cancer treatment not available through the NHS.
“This treatment aims to extend Zoe’s time with her family and friends, and ensure our two young daughters have their mum around for as long as possible.”
Zoe’s cancer had spread
James said a lump was first discovered on Zoe’s cervix during a routine examination while she was pregnant with their second daughter. But after further smear tests came back inconclusive, the couple opted for a private colposcopy because the waiting time on the NHS was three months.

Zoe was then diagnosed with Villoglandular Adenocarcinoma. But by January 2020, the cancer had spread to the lungs. This news confirmed that the cancer was now not curable, James said.
Family and friends have been taking part in various fundraisers to get the cash together for Zoe’s treatment, including husband James’ cycle along the King Alfred’s Way. And friend Ben Hansell, who grew up with Zoe in Bath, recently took part in a double Ironman to boost funds.
