Motorists in Leicester might soon need a time machine for their commute – as road works across the city are showing end dates in 2099.The unusual scheduling apparently affects multiple routes throughout Leicester.
A road closure near the Phoenix Cinema, in Burton Street, in the Cultural Quarter, shows work that began in January 2022 is now scheduled to continue until Christmas Day in 74 years’ time. The data appeared on the One.Network platform which Leicester City Council uses to share road closure information.
Other locations showing end dates decades hence include a closure in St Martins, near Grey Friars. The permit details suggest this closure has been in place since November 2020.

It comes as Leicester Area Traffic announced a new road closure for urgent Severn Trent repairs. The work, in Humberstone Road, is scheduled between January 2, 2024 and January 7, 2024, between Forest Road and Overton Road.
The unusual dates have drawn attention on social media, with one user commenting: “Do you mean Road closures 02/01/25 to 07/01/25 #BacktotheFuture.”
The date errors appear to be isolated to Leicester City Council’s notices, with road closure information from other councils and utilities companies displaying correctly.
