Morgan Whittaker set to reach Plymouth Argyle milestone against Stoke City

Morgan Whittaker is set to make his 100th appearance for Plymouth Argyle in the away Championship game against Stoke City tomorrow (12.30pm).

The talented 23-year-old attacker has contributed 32 goals, and many assists as well, from his total of 86 starts and 13 substitute appearances over his two spells at the club. Whittaker first joined the Pilgrims in the summer of 2022 on loan from Swansea City, who recalled him at the start of the following January.

However, Whittaker returned to Argyle in a permanent transfer in July 2023 for a club record fee of £1 million on a four-year contract. He went on to score 19 Championship goals last season and that was one of the main reasons why the Pilgrims were able to stay up.

Whittaker was the subject of a 10 million euro offer from Italian Serie A side Lazio last January, while Burnley made bids to sign him at the end of the 2024 summer transfer window but he has remained part of the Argyle squad.

This season he has only netted three times, but had a recent spell out of the side due to a toe injury, although he has played in the last two games. Whittaker had arguably one of his best performances of the season in the 2-2 draw with Bristol City at Home Park on New Year’s Day, when he set up Rami Al Hajj for the first of Argyle’s two equalisers during that game.

First team coach Kevin Nancekivell, who has taken temporary charge of the Pilgrims along with Joe Edwards after the departure of head coach Wayne Rooney on New Year’s Eve, was particularly pleased with the work-rate of Whittaker against the Robins.

“It was great to see,” said Nancekivell. “Like everybody else, Morgan ran himself around and gave everything he had got, and was a real impact in the game for us.

“If Morgan can do that we all know what a talented player he is on the ball. If he can continue with his work rate off it we are going to be in a good place.”
