A spider monkey wearing a tutu was apprehended near a US highway on Friday (January 3) after giving motorists an eye-full.

Law enforcement responded to reports of a subject who had gone “bananas” near the Missouri highway. When they arrived they found the spider monkey, dressed in what Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office described as a tutu. The scantily-clad ape was staying at a nearby home and had decided to inject some fun into a slow afternoon by heading out to flash drivers.

“After careful negotiations and some coaxing, deputies were able to get close enough to go ‘hands on’ with the subject and bring this bananas situation under control without incident,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post.

Coppers managed to surround the monkey, with one photo from the bizarre scene showing a deputy crouching next to the animal and holding its hand.

The Facebook post added: “In all seriousness, this is a great example of law enforcement officers never knowing what they’ll face on any given call, and having to be prepared to handle whatever the job throws at them.”

After a tense standoff, the fashion-conscious creature was returned to its caretaker.

It comes after law enforcement in California encountered a spider monkey, this time wearing a pink onesie, while on call.

A man was arrested after police stopped a speeding car, inside which they found a spider monkey wearing a pink onesie. The arrest, made on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of cannabis for sale, was carried out on December 30 by an officer from California Highway Patrols Madera office after spotting the Rolls Royce Ghost breaking the speed limit.

In a statement on Facebook, the police force said: “@californiadfw took possession of the spider monkey and took it to the Oakland Zoo for appropriate care. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife discourages illegal pet trade.”
