As the festive season draws to a close, many will be considering kick-starting the new year with a diet plan. While many of us relish indulging over Christmas, some will seize the opportunity of a fresh start to get their fitness and healthy eating back on track – and this straightforward diet trick could assist those aiming to shed some extra Christmas weight.
The late weight loss expert Michael Mosley, who astonishingly lost a stone in just 21 days on the plan, revealed exactly how he achieved it prior to his unfortunate passing last year. The late TV doctor claimed that cutting down on one type of food and substituting it with another yields results “very fast.”
Dr Mosley, a regular guest on This Morning, explained how he managed to lose 14lbs in just three weeks thanks to the Fast 800 Keto diet, which he devised with his wife, Dr Claire Mosley. However, it’s worth noting that this special diet should not be adopted as a long-term lifestyle plan due to its restrictive nature.

Instead, it is recommended as a short-term, rapid diet to aid those needing to lose unhealthy weight quickly. So, how does it work?
Essentially, following a keto diet means reducing your carbohydrate intake while increasing protein, healthy fats, and vegetables, reports the Mirror. It aligns perfectly with the life-prolonging Mediterranean diet, which centres around fruit, vegetables, seafood, beans, and nuts.

In his book ‘The Fast 800 Keto’, Dr Mosley sets out a clear guideline for those looking to shed pounds quickly: keep daily carbohydrates below 50g and protein above 50g, all while maintaining a calorie intake between 800 to 1,000. Dr Michael Mosley, in an earlier Instagram video, advised: “When you’re on a Keto diet, the main thing is to cut out the sugary stuff, but also the carbs – that means things like potatoes and rice. Instead, you pile in all those luscious, green leafy veg.”
He further explained the benefits of the Keto diet: “The point of a Keto diet, is when you go on it, you lose weight very fast, but it also suppresses your hunger hormone, something called ghrelin. On top of that, it also helps preserve your muscles.”
The Fast 800 team suggests following the plan for a maximum of 12 weeks or until reaching a normal BMI. Afterward, transitioning to Mosley’s 5:2 or Way of Life diets is recommended. The 5:2 diet involves ‘fasting’ two days a week with a limit of 800 calories, whereas the Way of Life diet promotes a sustainable Mediterranean-style diet.
Recent studies have highlighted the keto diet’s effectiveness for individuals with type 2 diabetes, particularly in reducing central obesity and managing blood sugar levels.
