The future of roles in Meta’s Dublin office has come into question following the company’s announcement it will cut jobs.
Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp’s parent company has announced it will cut 5% of staff worldwide in a memo to staff. While Mark Zuckerberg’s company has yet to confirm exact numbers and locations, cuts are also expected within its Grand Canal Dock location.
Staff that are let go worldwide are expected to be replaced by new hires across the company internationally. It would mean the company will retain its 72,000 employees worldwide.
It comes as Mr Zuckerberg, 40, also confirmed the elimination of fact-checking within Meta’s social media sites. He has criticised the EU’s laws on moderation and hate speech, and claimed fines on tech giants are “screwing” them. He called the re-election of Donald Trump as US president a “tipping point” for him.
Meta Ireland currently employs over 2,000 people. Mr Zuckerberg has said that the job cuts will apply to its international divisions, which includes Ireland.

In a memo first reported by Bloomberg, he said: “I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management. We typically manage out people who aren’t meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we’re going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle.”
The multi-billionaire added: “We won’t manage out everyone who didn’t meet expectations for the last period if we’re optimistic about their future performance, and for those we do let go we’ll provide generous severance in line with what we’ve provided with previous cuts. People who are impacted will be notified on February 10, or later for those outside the US.”
Meta has been handed fines of €2 billion in recent years by the Data Protection Commissioner. Shares in Meta fell by 2.3% yesterday as a result of the announcement.
