Met Office warns communities ‘could be cut off’ as it issues three-day snow warning for East Midlands

Communities could be cut off and power supplies may be lost due to heavy snow in the East Midlands, the Met Office has warned. It has issued a yellow weather warning for snow, which is valid from Saturday, January 4 at noon until 9am on Monday, January 6.

The warning covers the majority of England, with the exception of the very south west and parts of the eastern coast. The Met Office said ‘significant accumulations of snow are possible’.

A spokesperson said: “Currently, parts of the Midlands, Wales and northern England are most at risk of disruption, where 5cm or more could accumulate fairly widely, with perhaps as much as 20-30 cm over high ground of Wales and/or the Pennines. This, accompanied by strengthening winds, may lead to drifting of lying snow.”

It also warned of freezing rain for a time as milder air attempts to move north. The spokesperson added: “There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected. There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off

“There is a chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.”

The warning is the latest to be issued for the East Midlands after heavy rain led to flood alerts and warnings being issued on New Year’s Day. There was also a warning for strong winds on January 1, with the Met Office warning of a ‘slight chance of some damage to buildings’.
