Met Office upgrades weather warning and says snow could be ‘persistent and heavy’

An amber weather warning has been issued for Nottinghamshire as the county braces for a weekend of snow and ice. The Met Office has issued the alert for between 6pm on Saturday, January 4 and 12pm on Sunday, January 5.

The agency warned snow and freezing rain “will likely lead to disruption to transport and some other services” across most of the Midlands and northern England. Temperatures are forecast to hover at and just above freezing throughout Saturday in Nottingham, with heavy snow expected overnight and into the early hours of Sunday.

“Snow will become persistent and locally heavy as it pushes south to north across the warning area,” the Met Office wrote. “As well as snow, a period of freezing rain is also likely bringing some hazardous travel conditions, before milder air follows across all areas by Sunday morning.”

It said people in the warning areas should expect travel delays and a “good chance” that power cuts may occur. The Met Office added: “Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers.

“Some road closures and longer journey times possible. Some delays and cancellations to bus, rail and air travel are likely. There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off. Untreated pavements and cycle paths likely to be impassable.”

The latest upgraded weather warning follows an amber health alert from the UK Health Security Agency which was issued earlier this week.
