Met Office updates New Year’s Day weather warning with 60mph winds forecast

The Met Office has updated a New Year’s Day weather warning for wind – with the alert now covering much of North Wales. Partygoers out celebrating the arrival of 2025 could be affected by stormy conditions across the region overnight.

A 24-hour weather warning for rain, covering much of North Wales, comes into force at 6pm on New Year’s Eve, and remains in place until 6pm on New Year’s Day. You can read more about that warning here.

A separate weather warning for wind was previously only in force in the south of Gwynedd, however the Met Office has now updated this warning. It now covers all of North Wales apart from Anglesey.

The warning comes into force at 12.15am on New Year’s Day, and remains in place until 3pm the same day. People have been warned to expect disruption as a result of the strong winds.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Strong southwesterly winds are expected overnight and during Wednesday. The strongest winds are expected across coastal regions in the west and south of the warning area, where gusts of 65-75mph are possible.

“Inland, highest gusts will typically be between 45 and 55mph, but possibly 60mph in places, particularly in association with the passage of squally cold front which will bring a band of heavy rain southwards. The wind is expected to ease quickly from the north through the course of the day as this cold front passes.”

The Met Office warned people to expect the following:

  • There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected
  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris
  • There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close.

The Met Office said conditions are set to be “much sunnier” in Wales by the end of the week, however temperatures will drop. A spokesperson said it will be “notably colder with some sharp overnight frosts”.

They added: “Scattered showers in the north and west, wintry over the hills. Mostly light winds.”
