Merseyside has been placed under several weather warnings over the weekend. On Sunday, January 5, the city was hit by snow as temperatures plummeted. The weather has caused plenty of disruption with Arriva delays and Merseyrail cancellations.

The Met Office has issued another weather warning for Merseyside. A new yellow weather warning for snow and ice will be in place from 5pm today until 10am tomorrow morning, January 7.

The warning comes alongside a yellow weather warning for snow and ice the region is already under. A rare amber warning was in place for much of the weekend, as the region saw heavy snowfall and icy conditions.

The Met Office said: “Further snow over the hills of northern England and North Wales giving 5-10 cm in places at first this morning. Rain also turning increasingly to snow at lower levels, particularly over northeast Wales and the northern parts of the Midlands, where 2-5 cm could accumulate. Snow will ease again later in the morning. Icy stretches are likely to develop quite widely, making for some difficult travelling conditions.”

When it comes for what to expect as a result of the snow and ice warning, the Met Office added: “Some roads and railways may be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths and some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.”

In addition to the ice, snow above 200 metres is likely with a small chance of snowfall greater than 5 cm above 200 metres in Wales. The heaviest snow showers may also produce temporary accumulations of 0cm to 2 cm at low levels.

Icy stretches and sleet/snow showers are expected developing overnight, bringing some disruption, especially to travel. The Met Office map below shows the areas of Merseyside covered by the new yellow weather warning.

To keep safe, the Met Office has advised leavings the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

And if you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.

In their forecast for tonight, the forecast issued by the Met Office states: “Further wintry showers and icy stretches overnight, primarily for Merseyside, Manchester and Cheshire. Prolonged clear periods elsewhere, under which a frost likely forming. Blustery around coasts and hills. Minimum temperature -3 °C.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow they state: “Sunny spells and scattered showers, mixing rain, sleet, snow and hail. Showers tending to fade later as winds also ease. Cold, with a widespread and locally severe frost overnight. Maximum temperature 5 °C.”
