Met Office issues yellow weather warning for ice in Wales

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice in Wales. The forecasting agency has warned that icy surfaces will probably lead to difficult travel conditions.

The warning has been issued from 6pm on Thursday evening, January 2, until 10am on Friday morning, January 3. It comes as the forecaster has issued a three-day weather warning for snow in Wales. According to the Met Office, snow may turn to a spell of freezing rain for a time, especially across parts of Wales, adding to the risk of ice and leading to some treacherous conditions in places. Different forecasters are giving varying predictions on when and for how long Wales could see snow – read more about that here.

While there is the threat of what the Met Office describes as “disruptive snow” for the weekend, they have now warned we could be experiencing icy conditions as well. Their warning for such conditions reads: “Wintry showers are expected to affect parts of north and west Wales at times on Thursday night. Whilst any snow is likely to be confined upwards of 200 metres and produce accumulations of no more than 1-2 cm in a few places, rain and sleet at low levels will leave surfaces wet and allow ice to form where untreated.”

This warning has been issued for some parts of Wales, mainly parts of north, mid and west Wales. They are:

  • Carmarthenshire
  • Ceredigion
  • Conwy
  • Denbighshire
  • Gwynedd
  • Isle of Anglesey
  • Pembrokeshire
  • Powys

People in these affected areas could experience some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, as well as some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces. This warning has a medium likelihood and a low impact. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter.

But the Met Office has warned that people should keep themselves and their family safe when it is icy, plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. It warns that there is no need to rush, as this will reduce people’s risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

It warns: “If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated. Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
